Makalu Base Camp Trek
Makalu Base Camp Trek is the visit to one of the most isolated areas of Nepal Himalayas at the altitude of 5250m. Mount Makalu is a fifth highest mountain in the world measuring 8463m and it is surrounded by high mountains of Everest-8850m, Lhotse-8516m, Baruntse-7129m, Chamlang-7319m & Kanchenjunga-8586m. Makalu Barun area is a national park linked between Tibet and Nepal covering the area of 2330sq km. and Nepal shares 830 square kilometre in area.
Makalu Base Camp Trekking starts from Tumlingtar of eastern Nepal by taking a scenic flight from Kathmandu and then we follow the upstream of Arun river valley to the remote mountain village of Sedua and Num, Tashigaon, Kogma Danda, passing Shipton La, Yangli Kharka we then follow Barun River. The trial continues furthermore to Lagmale Kharka, Sherson and finally reaches to Makalu Base Camp at 4900m and passing a day in this area we explore the area up to 5200m. While returning the trekkers traverse through Yangli Kharka, Dobate, Khogma Danda, Tashigaon, Seduwa, Num, Tumlingtar and back to Kathmandu.
Trekking in Makalu Base Camp allows you to search the remote villages, glaciers, moraines, high mountains, two mixed cultures and different ethnic groups of Nepal- people residing in Arun River Valley, and Upper Baruntse mountain valley. The duration of this trek is 21 days however people seeking for more challenges extended this trek for more days to reach towards the Everest crossing Amphu Lapcha Pass via Panch Pokhari at 5850m which is considered as technically difficult for the normal trekkers adding more challenging days in the itinerary.
Itinerary in Details
Day 01: Upon arrival, pick up by our airport representative and transfer to Hotel. Welcome dinner and detailed information are provided by our team. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 02: Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing: Visiting some historical and ancient monuments, Royal Palaces, Stupas and temples of Kathmandu valley such as Sowyambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Kathmandu Royal Palace and House of Living Goddess Kumari. Overnight in Hotel at Kathmandu.
Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar (eastern Nepal) and drive to the Chirchira village (1950m)from where the trek begins. The flight will be around 50 minutes with the beautiful views of Himalayan Landscape and from Tumlingtar 3-4 hour drive to reach Chirchira village, a small Gurung Settlement. Overnight in Lodge/Homestay.
Day 04: Trek begins from Chirchira to Num 1560m 6 hours of trek: The first day of the trek leads us to Num after breakfast. We will follow through the very beautiful landscape and forest to arrive in Num village. Overnight in Num.
Day 05: Num to Seduwa at 1500m/6 hours of trek: A steep descent down through the beautiful forest and terraced land towards Arun River where we can register our permit in Makalu Barun National Park then we follow the uphill track to reach Seduwa Village. Overnight in Seduwa.
Day 06: Seduwa to Tashi Gaon (village): 2100m- 5 hours of trek: Tashi Gaon is a beautiful Tamang and Sherpa community village surrounded by mountains and small fields. We reach there by following the uphill path and paddy fields. Overnight in Tashi Gaon.
Day 07: Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma Danda (3,500m): 6-7 hours: The trekking trail leads us now to the higher elevation to reach Khogma Danda. More uphill and steep route which passes through yak grazing land on the top of the ridge. Follow the small descend to reach Khogma Danda. Overnight in Khongma Danda (Ridge).
Day 08: Acclimatization day: Explore the area of Khogma Danda and rest with beautiful views of the mountains. Overnight in Khongma.
Day 09: Khogma Danda to Dobate crossing Shipton La 4216m and Keke La 4150m- Steep climb for the superb view of Mt. Makalu and other surrounding mountains of Chamlang (7321m), Peak 6 (6,524m) and Peak 7 (6,758m). The first pass is Tutu la at 4050m before reaching Barun River that descends to the small lake of Kalo Pokhari we then climb to Shipton la and then the third pass is Keke-la and finally, we arrive at Debate. Overnight in Dobate.
Day 10: Dobate to Yangri Kharka: 6 hours of walk 3580m We follow the route of Barun River and Rhododendron Forest to reach Yangri Kharka. Be careful with first two hours as we pass through landslide area and after that, there is a pleasant walk to arrive at Yangri Kharka.
Day 11: Yangri Kharka to Langmale Kharka: (4,400m): We follow the path to Langmale Kharka following a walk through the valley and yak pastureland and fir and rhododendron forest which takes us 6 hours to arrive in Langmale Kharka. Stay overnight in Langmale Kharka.
Day 12: Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp 4870m 6/7 hours of trek: Today we will be reaching to Makalu Base Camp in 6/7 hours passing through the view of the icy glacier and snow-covered gigantic mountains around us. Overnight in Makalu Base Camp.
Day 13: Explore Makalu Base Camp 5250m: Today is the day we make it to the Base Camp. From Langmale Kharka we make our way up to Shershong and eventually to Makalu Base Camp. The trail is flat with icy glaciers and snow clad mountains accompanying us. Mount Makalu comes into view as we approach Shershong. As we make our way to the camp, we get to soak in the majestic Himalayan panorama surrounding us. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.
Day 14 to Day 20: It is now time to get back from Makalu Base Camp following the similar path up to Tumlingtar with the panoramic views of mountain, village, lakes, uphill, downhill, streams, and meeting different people. On the 20th day, you will be arriving in Tumlingtar.
Day 21: Flight back to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar.
Day 22: We will drop you at the international airport for your final departure with the beautiful memories of the great Makalu Base Camp Trek.
