Gokyo Valley Trek

Gokyo valley Trek is one of the most beautiful and scenic mountain trekking destinations in the lap of the Khumbu Himalaya of Nepal. Gokyo Valley trekking lies 4790 meters above the sea level in the Everest region. Each year many trekkers visit this place to explore the utmost beautiful land.

Gokyo Valley Trek is suitable for all kind of trekkers because from Gokyo Lake the way is divided into two highest passes of the Everest region Chola-Pass 5420m and Renjo-la pass- 5435m. If the trekkers want to avoid these two challenging passes then a steep climb of Gokyo-Ri at 5357 meters provides a lot of scenic view of mountains, glaciers, lakes, and arid landscape from North to South. Some spectacular view of the mountains is Mt. Everest-8850m, Lhotse- 8501m, Makalu-8470m, Cho-oyou-8156m. The formidable view of the Nepal’s biggest glacier Ngozumpa glacier is just infront of your eyes from the top of the Gokyo Ri. Gokyo valley Trekking offers another attraction of spectacular view of huge ice range between Chooyu and Gyachung Kang at 7952m, the fifteenth highest mountain of the world.

Gokyo Valley Trekking can be reached by taking a scenic mountain flight from the Kathmandu to Lukla and follow the path of Namache Bazar entering into the Sagarmatha National Park. The breathtaking Thameserku mountain from the bank of Dudh Koshi while heading to Namche Bazar always plays hide and seek game with you. Other view of the mountains from Namche bazaar is Kusum Kangaru, Khang Tega, and Amadbadlam mountain ranges.  From Namache Bazar, the path is divided into two alternatives routes to Gokyo Valley Trek. You can take an alternative path from Khumjung Village to Dole, and fantastic village of Macehermo and finally to Gokyo lake following other two small lakes. You can visit all the lakes around Gokyo valley and climb to Gokyo Ri for the beautiful scenic view.

There is alternative but challenging route to end the Gokyo Valley Trekking that is cross the fantastic Renjo-la Pass and arrive at Lungden, Thame village, and back to Lukla and Finally return back flight to Kathmandu. You can complete this trek in 13 days which includes 11 days of trekking and two days in Kathmandu.

Itinerary Details of Gokyo Valley Trekking

Day 1: Arrival at Nepal’s International Airport. Pickup and transfer to Hotel of your choice or standard Hotel. Briefing of the Trek.

Day 2: Flight to Lukla-2840m, 30 minutes of flight, and trek to Phakding 2640m three hours of trek: The flight of the Everest is most scenic flight in the clear days and a bit of adventure on a tiny airstrip. The thirty minutes flight takes you to the Lukla airport where the trek begins towards Phakding down to Dudhkoshi River. Overnight in the Hotel at Phakding.

Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazzar 3440m- 6 hrs of Trek: To reach Namche Bazar we follow the Bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Thameserku mountains gives its first glimpse. We cross three suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River and climb uphill to enter in the Sagarmatha National Park Region, a world heritage site. We follow again the bed of the Dudh Koshi River before climbing up the suspension bridge over the river with the view of some more mountains. Two to three hours of walking on the uphill forest takes us to Namche Bazar, a trading capital of Khumbu region. Overnight in the guest house.

Day 4: Rest day in Namche Bazaar: We acclimatize ourself in Namche Bazar visiting Everest view point hotel or the view point at the Sherpa musemum. There is the view of several mountains from Namche Bazar Khang Tenga, Kusum Kangaru, and Thameserku, and Khumbilla mountains are the main of them. Overnight in the Guest House.

Day 5: Trek to Khumjung and hike to Khunde Village 3800m and 5 hours of Trek: We follow the trial towards Khumjung village following the Tenzing Hillary a small airstrip at the top of the Namche which is frequently used to carry goods in the Everest region. Khunde and Khumjung villages are the largest Sherpa Village in this region. There is a schoo, old monasteries, and Hospital in this village. It is the village where most of the village houses are covered with similar green colored roof. Visit the Khumjung Monastery to have a glimpse of mighty Yeti scalp. Overnight in the Guest House in Khumjung Village.

Day 6: Trek to Dole at 4200m, 6 hours of walk: We follow the path towards Dole, the first half of the steep climb and then pleasant climb in the upper alpine with the view of stunning mountains of Ama Dablam, Thameserku, Everest, Lhotse, Lhotse Sar, Nuptse and other mountains. We then reach to the Mong Danda. From here onwards, the trial goes down to the Phunki Thanga and then we continue our trial for few hours climbing in alpine forest filled with Pine, Juniper, Oaks, and Rhododendron forest and arrive at the small village of Dole for our overnight stay in a guest house.

Day 7: Trek to Machermo at 4480 meters, 4.30 hours of walk: We now head towards the Machermo village from where there is a good view of Chola-ste, Tabuche are visible on the other side of the valley. However, there is the end of tree line and a good view of Cho-oyu welcome us which divide the border between China and Nepal. Passing Lhabarma Kharka and Luza we finally descends down to Machermo where there are few good hotels. After lunch, hike the surrounding area of Machermo Village.

Day 8: Trek to Gokyo Lake 4790 m, 5 hours of walk: We trek today for our final destination of Gokyo Lake. A nice and regular path of Phanka. We cross the bridge over the small river formed by water of Gokyo lake. The water mixed with the large glacial river of Ngozumba Glacier, which is one of the main sources of Dudh Koshi River. We see the small first Gokyo Lake and then a little large second Lake and finally we reach to Gokyo Lake. We can see the shade of Mount Gyachung Kang, Gokyo Ri and other surrounding peak on this glacial lake. Explore the surroudnging area of Gokyo and visit the fifth lake. Overnight in a Hotel on the bank of the lake.

Day 9: Climb to Gokyo Ri at 5357m for the first sunshine view and trek back to Dole: We hike to the Gokyo Ri early in the morning to have a wonderful view of the sunshine over the gigantic peak of the world like Everest, Nupste, Lhoste, Makalu, Cho-oyu. Pass your wonderful moment with the view of the glacial lake, mountains, colorful prayer flags at the top and then descends down calmly to Gokyo.  We take our lunch and furthermore descends down to small Sherpa settlement of Dole on the same day.

Day 10: Trek to Monjo 2880m 6 hours of Trek: We walk downward trial to Phunki Tenga and furthermore climb to Mong Danda. There are several lodges with the great view of Everest, Amadablam, and Thameserku. We then descends down towards the way to Namche where we take a lunch and rest for some time. We continue our trek to Monjo for our overnight stay in a guest house.

Day 11: Trek to Lukla 2840 m, 5 hours of Trek: We lead to Lukla passing Phakding village and Ghat village sometimes passing the beautiful Mani Walls towards Lukla. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 12: Morning Flight to Kathmandu: After a wonderful and memorable trekking experience we will back to the city life. A chance to explore Kathmandu during your afternoon time or you can continue your stay for a day more.

Day 13: We will drop you to the International Airport for your respective destination after a great experience of most wonderful Gokyo Valley Trekking.

Most Important Note: Please be aware of taking smaller aircraft in mountainous region. Many conditions like bad weather, air traffic in Kathmandu might prolong your trek. Sometimes, it will be delay from Kathmandu or delay from Lukla. We strickly advise you to extend few more days before and after trekking days for all the Everest Trek to deal with such condition. However, we will try our best to make your program according to your itinerary.  In case of taking Helicopter flight it is advised to keep US Dollars 550 extra in a safe side. It will take two-and-half days to return to Kathmandu  from Lukla by trekking and jeep ride.
